A fter two decades of meticulous restoration, the historic Imaret in Kavala re-emerges as one of the most captivating cultural retreats in the Mediterranean — a sanctuary where history, architecture, and inner peace coexist in rare harmony.

Built in 1813 by Mohammed Ali Pasha — founder of modern Egypt and son of Kavala — Imaret was originally a charitable foundation devoted to generosity: a theological school, a refuge, and a public kitchen for travellers of every faith. After years of abandonment, the landmark monument was reborn at the dawn of the 21st century through the vision of Anna Misirian, who secured a 50-year lease from the Egyptian authorities and undertook a monumental three-year restoration.

The result was a transformation into a haven of elegance, where luxury and memory meet. Twenty years later, in October 2025, the second phase of restoration was completed, unveiling an Imaret more mature, serene, and introspective than ever — a place inviting guests to pause, listen, and reconnect with themselves.

Today, Imaret houses only eight luxurious suites, adorned with authentic Ottoman-baroque details, vintage textiles, and original furnishings. Marble arches, inner courtyards, and aromatic gardens compose a setting where time appears to stand still. Its philosophy of hospitality is inspired by the great voyages of the past, offering an experience that is personal, cultivated, and profoundly human.

Gastronomy is an integral part of the experience. With an emphasis on authenticity and sustainability, ingredients are sourced exclusively from the surrounding region, while the menu draws inspiration from the cuisines of the Eastern Mediterranean. Five distinctive dining rooms — each with its own atmosphere — reflect the rhythm and ritual of a house that celebrates the meal as an act of care.

At the heart of Imaret, the original Ottoman hammam has been transformed into a sanctuary of deep relaxation. Nearby, a panoramic sauna, a meditation room, and a Watsu ritual pool complete the wellness journey. Every treatment is personalised, attuned to the visitor’s needs, with the nature and history of Thrace forming the backdrop for a journey of self-discovery.

Imaret’s cultural dimension extends beyond its walls. Guests are invited to discover authentic Thrace through seasonal experiences — boat trips on Lake Vistonida, hiking on Mount Pangaion, excursions to Amphipolis, or sailing to Thasos. Within its grounds, workshops in aromatherapy, traditional bread-making, and wine tasting create a mosaic of senses, culture, and philosophy.

In this new era, Imaret redefines itself not simply as a hotel, but as a modern sanctuary devoted to the art of tranquility, hospitality, and rediscovery.
